HEAL YOUR CHAKRAS, HARMONIZE YOUR LIFE
November 2, 2012
In my previous article titled “What Are Chakras Anyways?”, we learned that chakras are energy centers along our body that affect our wellbeing in vital ways. For a refresher on their colours, locations, characteristics, corresponding life areas and affirmations, check out the article here.
Once you have a basic understanding of the seven main chakras, the next step is to learn how you can heal and balance them to affect positive changes in yourself and your life. While chakra work is an art and science that professional healers spend a lifetime mastering, there are some wonderfully simple ways you can keep all your energy centers healthy, including:
- Practice mind-body healing exercises like yoga, tai chi and qi gong
- Spend 10 to 20 minutes in sunlight each day without sunscreen (sunlight cleanses the aura)
- Try regular energy healing sessions (like Reiki, crystal therapy, pranic healing)
- Incorporate fruits and vegetables from all the colours of the rainbow into your daily diet
- Get adequate sleep (at least seven hours, ideally eight)
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Avoid or minimize stimulants, depressants, processed foods and chemicals
- Hold positive and affirmative thoughts about all areas of your life
- Bring in each colour of the corresponding chakra into your life (through clothing, flowers, decorative objects, crystals etc.)
There are also ways you can work with each major chakra to heal and flourish in its related areas. Here are some practical and effective techniques to try:
First Chakra (Root/Muladhara): Get Grounded
- Spend time in nature
- Move those legs! Walk, jog or run, especially outdoors
- Really feel your feet while you walk (try barefoot on the ground)
- Become more present in your daily life
- Lie on the grass or sit under a tree
- Bring nature into your environment with plants, flowers, rocks and crystals
Second Chakra (Sacral/ Svadhisthana): Relish, Receive and Rejoice
- Take regular sea salt baths (sea salt purifies the physical and etheric bodies)
- Eat a healthy, well balanced diet and really relish the food you eat
- Let your inner child come out and play
- Drink a lot of water and spend time around water (lake, beach, river, sea)
- Practice healthy sexual boundaries that satisfy you yet honour you as a Divine being
- Indulge your body by getting spa treats, dancing sensually and slathering luxurious creams on yourself after a bath or shower
- Do creative activities for sheer enjoyment – the way you did when you were a kid!
Third Chakra – (Solar Plexus/Manipura): Be True to You
- Soak in 15 to 20 minutes of sunlight during sunrise and sunset
- Keep a safe and respectful distance from anyone who drains your time or energy
- Stand up for yourself and stay in your power – say “no” when you need to
- Align your actions with your deepest values
- Do core-strengthening exercises (like pilates and yoga) and strength training workouts
- Take deep belly breaths throughout the day and try to make this a habit
- Do things that uplift, inspire and energize you
Fourth Chakra – (Heart/Anahata): Let Love Rule
- Forgive: let go of all past hurts, betrayals and pains so your heart can be free and light
- Ensure that giving and receiving are balanced in all your relationships
- Buy yourself flowers, especially pink roses, to open your heart and demonstrate self-love
- Be gentle with yourself for your mistakes and accept yourself unconditionally
- Avoid indulging in toxic news or gossip, and focus instead on the good in people and the world
- Allow yourself to love and be loved
- Send love (imagine shimmering pink light) from your heart to every sentient being each morning
- Spend quality time with your pet and learn how to give and receive unconditional love
Fifth Chakra – Throat/ Vissudha – Express Yourself, Darling
- Sing! Singing is one of the best ways to open up your throat chakra
- Journal every day and express your thoughts and feelings without censor
- Communicate honestly and effectively in all your relationships, with gentle and firm strength
- Express your ideas in creative ways (through writing, speaking, singing)
- Spend time watching the sky when it’s clear and blue
Sixth Chakra – Forehead/Ajna: Open Your Eye
- Ignite your imagination by visualising a bright present and future, seeing your greatest dreams come true
- Ask your Spirit for guidance on everything and pay attention to any signs you receive
- Read inspiring literature on spirituality, metaphysics, philosophy and mythology
- Trust your inner wisdom and follow it
- Write down your dreams and reflect on them for insights
Seventh Chakra – Crown/ Sahsrara: Allow Your Bliss
- Embrace silence through frequent relaxation and meditation breaks
- Develop a consistent daily meditation practice (even 5 minutes every day helps)
- Pray or just talk to the higher force you believe in (God/Goddess, Great Spirit, Universe, Creator)
- Bring violet and purple objects (crystals, flowers) in your environment
- Give your intent each morning to live from your Higher Self
Though these tips sound simple enough, actually practicing them takes a deep commitment to your health and happiness. Doing things like standing up for yourself, playing, treating yourself, eating healthy or forgiving someone can require immense courage, discipline and motivation.
A good place to start is by checking off the things you’re already doing (good for you!) and adding one more thing from each list that resonates with you and that you can incorporate into your life now. Slowly, you can keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and try things that feel more challenging. By taking these small steps to heal your chakras, you’re taking huge leaps in harmonizing your life.
